O famoso monumento de Malta (Malta's most famous monument)

By 09:10 ,

Orgulhoso do meu Pais (Proud of my Country)

The most famous monument is not commemorating the Great Siege of Malta of 1565, or WWII, but it’s a modern monument erected in 2006. It’s official name is ‘The Mediterranean Column’, but everybody knows it as the Luqa Monument.

Luqa is a town near the airport and this monument is in the middle of the Luqa roundabout, so people who come out of the airport cant’s miss it!

The monument  was commissioned by the Luqa local council, but when it was erected people from the town of Luqa started protesting because they said it's vulgar, and they wanted it removed. Even the council wanted it removed.

Paul Vella Critien the artist who created it was shocked, and he said it's the people who have dirty minds if they think it looks like a penis. He said it's inspired by Native American totem poles.

The planning authority was considering removing it, but in the end decided against it. If they removed it, that would have been admitting that the local council made a mistake, and they had paid for a giant penis to be erected on the roundabout. In Malta people don't admit mistakes.

In 2007 a local comedian recorded an album of 8 songs, all about the Monument!

In 2010 Pope Benedict visited Malta, and he was due to pass in front of the Monument. Again the Luqa residents protested, and there was great controversy and this was talked about on all the newspapers for days. It was at this time that the monument became famous all around the world. It was mentioned in the news of UK, USA, Australia, Russia, and Brazil amongst many other countries.

Again the government was going to remove the monument before the Pope's visit, or just move it temporarily. But in the end they decided against it. If they had removed it or moved it they would have been admitting they had a giant penis on the roundabout for the past 4 years.

During the visit some Christian fanatics got a huge banner and put it in front of the monument just before the Pope passed. They tried to hide the monument behind the banner so the Pope wouldn't be scandalized.

People who know the artist who created the monument said he never meant for it to look that way. When he was baking the ceramic it started melting, so it changed shape and ended up looking like a penis. But the artist didn't admit the mistake in public, so he pretended it was meant to be like that.

After the monument became so famous, Vodafone Malta decided to use it in one of their marketing campaigns. The monument still stands tall and proud on the Luqa roundabout.
